Here is a great website with prices, info, and even some vid clips of some fashion shows of the time.

Also, you will notice, when the economy is financially unstable womens clothing becomes more conservative such as longer skirts, longer hair, less brocade or decorations, just more simple. When the economic market seems to be booming the skirts become shorter, the color more vibrant, more decoration, and the hair seems to be shorter or even more styleized. The late 50′s and early sixties do reflect that. In the late 50′s the skirts were past the knee, the material was a more sturdy cotton blend, and the decoration was minimal as well as the hair was a little longer and less styled. With the early sixties the skirt styles were above the knee or even mid thigh by the mid sixties and the pencil dress style for evening wear, poly blends and polyester was all the rage. Boufant hair, hair accessories, and even shorter hair styles were the "in" thing. A great representation of high end fashion of that era is Jaquelin Kennedy or "Jackie O". Then on the lower to middle class you can look to Bridgett Bardot, Patty Duke, Sally Fields (gidget the teen show), Raquel Welch, Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and one of the most popular models TWIGGY.
On the male side of fashion, the pencil suit, the thinner lapels, loafers, straight leg pants, burmuda shorts, clam diggers (male version of girl capris), and oxford and polo shirts were starting to become popular. Surfing was all the rage as well as the "beach music". The Shag was a very popular dance of the time and many people would be seen in the warmer months with clam diggers and peddle pushers on. Flat slipper shoes or "beach comber" shoes (canvas boat shoes) were the most popular wear for casual fun.
Watch a few old tv or news reels on youtube if you can find them and you can see the "average" person in most of them.
Enjoy.
I think a good example would be Marilyn Monroe’s wardrobe. Even though she wasn’t mainstream in the early 60′s, I think her wardrobe reflects what you’re looking for.
Traditional, decorative, consevertive apparel in 60′s.
As to mid-grade girls, simple, inexpensive, cozy clothes are preferable.
